Synopsis: Bill Murray stars as John Winger, an indolent sad sack who impulsively joins the U.S. Army after losing his job, his car, his girlfriend and his apartment … and, for good measure, he cajoles his best friend (Harold Ramis) into enlisting, too. After making it through boot camp, the duo appropriates a state-of-the-art military vehicle for a weekend furlough, landing behind the Iron Curtain — and in the midst of an international incident.
Serious Jest: (Cruel & Unusual Punishment) What a waste of a good cast! The comedy was predictable, unimaginative, and lazy. I had a short laugh once throughout this whole movie when Sgt Hulka chokes someone in pure frustration…probably because of the frustration I experienced watching this movie. Admittedly, my Marine background makes me biased, but if you ever find yourself thinking this movie had some funny dialogue, try repeating the dialogue that you thought was funny out loud to someone else. Was it really funny…or were you drunk? I can’t believe the Kentucky National Guard cooperated in the filming of this movie. Didn’t anyone there ask to see the script?
