Serious Jest: (Must Own) Well-written and solidly acted (especially Jeremy Renner, who is developing quite an impressive body of work playing psychopaths and adrenaline junkies with death wishes), this movie remains engaging while obviously striving for authenticity: it was filmed in Boston, features many shots of real Boston scenery, includes real Charlestown townies in the cast (such as the actors who played Rusty and Dez), and some of the actors from out of town spent significant time hanging in Charlestown and surrounding themselves with townies to nail their roles and their accents. This movie is good enough to own, not just because you’ll want to watch it more than once, but also because you’ll get an extra 45 minutes or so out of the extended cut–I’d even watch the 4-hr original cut.
