Synopsis: In a classic poverty-row noir, the protagonist struggles helplessly in the grip of inexorable fate.
Director: Edgar G. Ulmer
Serious Jest: (Worth Watching) Tom Neal was great in portraying a character who is at his wit’s end with the cards life keeps dealing him. Ann Savage was a wonderful little sociopath. These two have good chemistry.
As I watched this film, I wondered to myself whether the pictured events were supposed to be what really happened or just an illustration of the protagonist’s story. In other words, did the character really do what he was accused of? I finally decided that I don’t believe him. What do you think?
