Serious Jest:  (Must See)  In college, I used to play the Resident Evil video game by myself in my dorm room, with all of the lights turned off.  My neighbors would tell their guests not to worry about the screaming next door…that was just me getting startled by a zombie dog breaking through a window and going for my jugular.  This movie captured the game’s suspense, using many of the same monsters, creepy settings, similar heroes, and even the same evil corporation (where are the Occupy Wall Streeters when you really need them?).  However, this film is much more an homage to the game than a movie that snaps into place with the game’s plot and history.  Jovovich is the heart and soul of this project…she is in great shape, and full of passion and intensity.  Rodriguez does what Rodriguez does best: tough-as-nails chick.  As I’ve said before, she’s only got one gear, but she rides it well.  This is a breakneck-paced adrenaline ride through a zombie-and-other-terrifying-monsters wonderland (it even takes place in a hive-shaped laboratory complex!), with (mostly) good special effects; however, it somehow still manages to be campy, with very little character development…don’t look for a compelling story, just enjoy the roller coaster ride!

  1. Awesome review! I agree with you the story isn’t really great, it’s just a badass film with a lot of terror and blood, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

Sound off!
