Cop Out (2010)

(R) 107 mins

Plot Summary: A comedy about a veteran NYPD cop whose rare baseball card is stolen. Since it’s his only hope to pay for his daughter’s upcoming wedding, he recruits his partner to track down the thief, a memorabilia-obsessed gangster.

Director: Kevin Smith

Writers: Robb CullenMark Cullen

Stars: Bruce WillisTracy Morgan and Juan Carlos Hernández

Serious Jest:  (Don’t Bother)  The concept of the baseball card is a unique spin, but in reality, this is just another buddy cop movie, with one zany/crazy partner, and the other a reluctant, stoic guy.  Willis and Morgan are both charismatic, but the script is just not that funny (and sometimes even the funny jokes are over-explained), or engaging as an action flick.  The best aspects of this film are its supporting performances, such as Seann William Scott‘s.  Overall, you’ll get some smirks out of this movie (maybe even a few laughs), but not enough to make it worth the time you wasted if you actually sat down and paid attention to it; and the action aspects are really just a backdrop for the mediocre comedy, not to be taken seriously.
