Rounders (1998)

(R) 120 mins

Plot Summary: Fueled by his penchant for high-stakes gambling, law student Mike McDermott (Matt Damon) befriends and “befoes” a fellow gambling addict named Worm (Edward Norton) and club owner Teddy KGB (John Malkovich).  But tensions run high when Worm and Mike have only five days to come up with $15K.  Gretchen Mol co-stars in this John Dahl-directed drama, whose superb cast and well-developed characters made Rounders a hit on the festival circuit.

Additional Cast: John TurturroFamke JanssenMartin LandauMichael RispoliJosh Mostel; and Tom Aldredge

Serious Jest:  (Worth Watching)  Many years ago, I tried to watch this movie twice, but never made it all the way through.  Both times, I tried to watch it with an ex-girlfriend who was incredibly sexy and distracting…alcohol & fatigue probably played a part in not finishing the movie, as well.  While I still think that sex will win out every time over this movie, it’s a pretty good film.  The actors really make the difference, and Malkovich in particular walks away with Most Kick-ass Performance, in my humble opinion.

I tried watching this movie with an irresistible ex many years ago. I love a good Matt Damon movie. However, mind-blowing sex trumped getting past the first 10 minutes–both times.
